Admission to PhD Programmes for July 2021 Session

Requirements for Institute Assistantship/ External Fellowship (Only for Regular & Full Time Category Candidates)


Institute Assistantships/ External Fellowships:

The Institute Assistantships/ External Fellowships (such as CSIR/ UGC/ NBHM, etc.) are available only to the students who are admitted under Regular & Full Time Category into PhD programmes.

Institute assistantships will be available to eligible students as per prevailing (MoE, GOI) norms, as applicable from time to time. The present rates of Institute Assistantships are as below:

First Two Years Rs.31,000/-
For Subsequent Three Years Rs.35,000/-

Requirement of GATE/ CEED/ NET/ INSPIRE, etc. for Institute Assistantships/ External Fellowships:

All Regular and Full Time Category Candidates must satisfy one of the following requirements (unless they are exempted) in addition to satisfying Eligibility Requirements related to Qualifying Degree.

  • If the qualifying degree is BE/ BTech/ BDes or equivalent, then the candidates must have valid and qualifying GATE score (valid and qualifying CEED score for PhD in Design).
  • If the qualifying degree is M.Sc. or equivalent, then the candidates must have valid and qualifying GATE score or valid CSIR-NET-JRF or any valid Research Fellowships from external organizations.
  • If the qualifying degree is M.A. in Humanities and Social Sciences disciplines or equivalent, then the candidates must have valid UGC-NET-JRF or UGC-NET-LS qualification.
  • If the qualifying degree is M.E./ M.Tech./ M.Des./ M.S. by Research or equivalent, the candidates must have joined this Masters programme through National Level Examinations conducted by MoE and its agencies and institutions such as UGC/ IIT/ IISc/ IISER/ IIIT.

Exemption from Requirement of GATE/ CEED/ NET/ INSPIRE, etc. for Institute Assistantships/ External Fellowships:

A Regular and Full Time Category Candidate satisfying one of the following requirements is exempted from the requirement of valid GATE/ CEED/ NET/ INSPIRE, etc.:

  • Having qualified degree as M.A./ M.Sc./ M.S./ M.Tech./ M.Des. from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) with minimum CPI of 8.0 in a 10-point scale.
  • Having qualifying degree as B.Tech. or B.Des. from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) with minimum CPI of 8.0 in a 10-point scale.

Important Rules:
  • Financial Assistantship/ Scholarship from the Institute will be given as per terms and conditions of IIT Guwahati and the MoE, GOI.
  • Assistantships/Fellowships from external funding organizations (e.g., CSIR/ UGC/ DST/ INSPIRE, etc) will be available as per terms and conditions of the concerned funding organizations. The award of Assistantships/ Fellowships from external funding organizations should be valid for another 3 months from the date of admission.
  • Students receiving assistantships/ scholarships from the Institute or fellowships from any other funding agencies, are required to perform academic/ teaching assistant duties as per prevailing norms of the Institute.
  • The continuation of the assistantship/ scholarship/ fellowship is subject to satisfactory performance of the assigned duties and satisfactory academic/ research progress of the student in the PhD Programme.
